Mobile morons

The newspapers' recent coverage of the stupidity of talking on a mobile phone while driving doesn't seem to be having any effect.

This afternoon on Al Sufouh Road I had cars in front, behind and beside me - with all three drivers concentrating on their mobile phone conversations.

Reminds me of the taxi driver who picked me up at MoE a few weeks ago. He drove off with a cup of tea in one hand and his mobile phone in the other. I kept quiet until it became apparent that he intended to continue drinking his tea and talking on the phone as we entered Sheikh Zayed Road. He thought it was amusing when I insisted he drove with both hands on the wheel.

What we need are cops at the side of the road, pulling people over who are either talking on their mobiles or driving without seatbelts and fining them on the spot. Nothing will change until there is serious enforcement of the laws.

The police said it's not an offence to talk on the phone while driving - the law hasn't caught up with it yet, like so much else.

But I think they could be charged with reckless or dangerous driving - I assume we have those written into the law?
